Tips for visiting the MoMA New York City

When in New York City, do NOT miss the Museum of Modern Art – AKA the MoMA! We were in NYC in May 2018 and wandered into the MoMA on a free Friday night. Below, and in our YouTube video, we share some tips for mastering your visit to one of the world's great museums.

MoMA Tip 1!

Start on the 5th floor and work your way down. The 5th floor has a lot of the big-name modernists you may be looking for –– including Van Gogh, Cézanne, Kahlo, Monet, Picasso and Rothko –– so head on up and enjoy those masterpieces while you still feel fresh and inspired.

MoMA Tip 2!

Don't miss the gift shop and design store. Gifts shops aren't a necessary part of museum visits, but the MoMA has one of the best. If you want to grab something to take home, you'll find better gifts here than at a hokey tourist shop near Times Square.

MoMA Tip 3!

If you're on a budget, visit on a Friday night. Every Friday night from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. the MoMA is free. Naturally, it will be packed, but you can tolerate the crowds by reminding yourself that you're seeing masterpieces in a beautiful space for absolutely nothing!

Bonus Tip!

Don't miss wandering through the outdoor Sculpture Garden!
